Featured Plant

Apios americana (Groundnut or Potato bean) is a vigorous but uncommon vine in the wild.  It has beautiful clusters of pinkish red, fragrant flowers in the summer.  It produces golf-ball sized tubers that are edible when cooked.  It grows in partly shaded thickets on rich moist soils throughout eastern North America.  The rhizomes can spread and the vines grow quickly in a season, so plant it where it won't be in competition with other plants, or put it in a large, deep container in the ground.
