BIRD SIGHTINGS at the NURSERY 2012May 4, 2012The last couple of weeks we've seen or heard Spotted Sandpiper, Upland Sandpiper, Chipping Sparrow, Field Sparrow.  A weather front yesterday brought Bobolink, Baltimore Oriole, Warbling Vireo, Yellow Warbler, and a brief visit from a Philadelphia Vireo.   White-throated and White-crowned Sparrows have also been heard.

The Kestrels have set up house under the eaves again and the Crows have moved to a new nest site up the road.  Other returned migrants include Savannah Sparrow, Eastern Meadowlark, Tree Swallow, Barn Swallow, and Flicker.  Visitors have included Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned KingletsVesper Sparrows have been singing down the back lane

American Crow Mallard

Very warm weather has stirred up the birds.  Migrants and residents are active around the nursery.  Nest building is going on by a pair of Crows in the front pine tree.  A pair of Mallards is checking out real estate around the pond.  Over the last week the new arrivals have been Song Sparrow, Eastern Phoebe, Brown-headed Cowbird, White-crowned SparrowKilldeer and Common Grackle have been around for a couple of weeks.

American Kestrel Red-tailed Hawk pair 

Bird action has been slow this past month.  A pair of Red-tailed Hawks have been regular visitors.  An American Kestrel has also been hunting regularly.  The first flock of Red-winged Blackbirds flew over recently and Robins are becoming more vocal.

While hiking today in woods north of the nursery I came across a large flock of Red Crossbills feeding on spruce cones.  A few weeks ago the same area had Brown Creeper and Barred Owl.  More usual sightings included B.C. Chickadees, Blue Jays, Juncos, Robins, Crows, Am. Goldfinch, and Nuthatches.

 A real mixed bag of weather has meant hardly any snow until yesterday.  Feeder visitors include Tree Sparrow, Junco and Mourning DovesBlue Jays and Crows are around calling.  Predators include American Kestrel, Red-tailed Hawk and Sharp-shinned Hawk.
